Camp Quality is a national charity supporting children living with cancer across five regions. Camp Quality Christchurch’s region extends from the Rakaia river north, including the West Coast, Nelson and Marlborough.
One-on-one support from trained Companions at summer camps and quality recreational activities during the year help children and their families overcome the challenges cancer brings. We make a difference for our children and their families by exceeding their expectations.
Through the generous support of donors we are able to provide our training, camps and activities at no cost to the families, companions or volunteers. We receive no government funding and rely on fundraising and the generosity of local organisations and companies, especially the Lions who are long standing supporters of what we do. All members of the Camp Quality Christchurch Committee are volunteers and give a great deal of their time to organising a wide variety of activities for the children, and their families.
An essential part of what we do is the recruitment and training of companions (18+ years) – the lifeblood of Camp Quality. Each child is carefully matched with a companion who cares for, stays by and interacts with that camper 24/7 while at camp.
We take the time to develop the skills and competencies of our volunteers ensuring that those involved are the right fit for what we do. All companions are interviewed upon application then invited to a two day training course in September. From here we match the best companions with our campers, ensuring that the campers get someone well suited to them.
Companions commit to the 6 days of camp as well as the time before and after camp building and nurturing relationships with their camper and their family. In excess of 8000 hours of volunteers’ time is required – just for each camp.
These young people are attracted to Camp Quality because in their eyes our purpose is a credible and achievable response to a need – and the people-focussed networks of Camp Quality transforms that attraction into meaningful commitment.
